CNN ImageSource is a collection of over 400,000 items from CNN's footage and photography archives, for use by professional video producers. Footage is licensed for a wide range of uses - from documentaries, to television, theatrical and corporate/institutional productions. Originally launched in 2007, the site inspired a wide range of competitors who swiftly surpassed ImageSource in ease of use and feature set.
CNN came to Method with the opportunity to redesign ImageSource, looking for a rich experience that clearly communicates its rich asset library and unique customer service offering. ImageSource - unlike its competitors - is staffed by trained librarians who offer personalized research and advice. To meet CNN's goals in the short timeframe defined, Method approached the project in two parallel streams of work. In the first work stream we worked closely with the CNN team to prioritize their business objectives and feature requirements. Through user research, stakeholder interviews, and collaborative brainstorming sessions, Method came up with a plan to restructure their online business strategy. In the second work stream, we integrated the newly defined business strategies into the redesign of the information architecture of the site. By deploying a prioritized list of features, Method helped the CNN ImageSource team streamline its customer service process, increase the number of registered users, and grow the business.
The redesigned website positions CNN ImageSource as an authority in its field. The site utilizes emerging technologies and multiple search features to facilitate user directed research and discovery (reducing CNN's cost of sale). Developed in Silverlight, the site incorporates extensive video clips, a tag-based search engine, and theme-based browsing functionality. Registered users can view more than 80,000 video items, order directly through the site or through a customer service representative, save searches, and have immediate FTP delivery of non-watermarked, high-resolution files.
"Providing access to CNN ImageSource's footage archive through the Internet enables us to truly put the wealth of our content at our clients' command," said Kathy Christensen, Vice President, News Archives & Research, CNN. "With this new service, customers get quick turnaround on the high-quality footage they want and need."
